Moving on pass fear

I’m a mom. I think since the first time I realized that someone, a little person, was depending on me to grow, thrive and live, there was a switch in my head that suddenly opened my eyes to so many hazards around me, to so much pain and sorrow in the world… and once I have seen everything, I couldn’t again go back to how I lived before.

I think this happens to all of us. When we love someone, when we cherish something, the fears of losing it make us extra cautious and even a little paranoid sometimes. I’m sure most first time parents will agree with me on this one.

However the thing is that our society has moved beyond that. Now, we fear ourselves. We fear our bodies’ capacities to do what they are meant to do biologically; we fear our instincts to keep our families and ourselves safe; we fear our feelings, we fear our minds, we fear ourselves to do what evolution and life meant us to. But, why?

Have you ever wonder what is behind our fears and worries? How come nowadays we need external experts constantly to reassure us of our abilities and decisions? Why aren’t we the experts in ourselves anymore?

The thing is, in my opinion at least, that behind fear there’s also power, control. When we, as parents, fear and doubt ourselves constantly and, therefore, hand the power over our lives, health and happiness to someone else, we are disabling ourselves from having ownership and doing what we are hardwired to do, which is to care for our bodies and our families. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Owning our health, owning our happiness, owning our wellness means trusting our bodies, minds and souls with them; it means asking questions, doing research, and also working constantly to make sure we live fulfilling our purpose. This can be a full time job in itself, but the only one truly worthy of the effort.

When you stop following the herd, because deep down you know you and your family deserve differently and start taking ownership of what happens with you and them in terms of health and wellbeing, you realize that the fear was just a safety net keeping you within your (dis)comfort zone and not allowing you to thrive through life and reach the optimal gene expression you were meant to.

I know it’s not easy. Ownership, responsibility to be the guardian in matters that feel too big for you, commitment to owning your decision regardless, it all comes with a price tag. Nonetheless, the gain is greater and with each step you take in this direction, the effort feels smaller and the benefit bigger.

Recently, in a Facebook group for mothers, I was reading a mother’s post asking about first foods to introduce to her child. The responses went from the old school approach of introducing shop-bought cereals to the newer ideas of Baby Led Weaning (BLW) and even some more Paleo approaches to this. In the end, as much as I cringed at many of the responses, it was the asking mother turn to choose, because she was left with as many questions after her post as before asking.

When my clients ask me questions about what to eat, how to parent or what to do about their ailments, if any, or their concerns, my answer is always the same: You know the answer. Each of them, whether they had a full program with me or attended one of my workshops, already had the answer within them. My role was only to provide some information, offer options and ask the right questions. The rest was all about them.

You see, I don’t want my clients to follow everything I say just because I say it. I want them to feel empowered enough to question me, to research on their own, to go beyond what we talk in our sessions so that each decision comes from a place of power and knowledge, so they can truly regain their wellness and keep control of their health, purpose and joy forever, regardless of where they go or do.

My only real advice is to stop being so scared of the world and start living it, making decisions, owning them and enjoying the journey towards an empowered and awesome you.
