Keeping up with Sleep… Regardless

Sleep - both in quality and quantity - is key to our wellness and sanity.

So many health issues start with poor sleep. From obesity to Auto-Immune Flares, from depression to muscle pain, sleep is key for us to truly thrive. But, what to do when circumstances dictate your sleep? (Like little babies waking up, long work shifts, etc.)

Well, in those cases we have to:

  1. Prioritize on sleep: I know how attractive can a good movie be once the kids are finally sleeping, but remember that pushing yourself to staying awake too long, will come with a price in the end.
  2. If you can't get quantity, focus on quality: Keeping a comfortable and stable room temperature, making sure your pillows are comfy, wearing soft clothes and even using props like Essential Oils (i.e.: lavender and chamomile) or noise machines can all support you into deeper and better sleep.
  3. Cut the blues at Sunset: I know this is one of the steps most people cringe at, but I have to say it: Limit your exposure to blue lights and technology after sunset. Especially if you're sitting in front of a screen working. If you MUST, at least use either yellow/amber glasses or install an app or program to make the screen yellowish.
  4. Create a Rest Routine... And stick to it: Make it simple and short at first, so it's sustainable, nothing stressful or cumbersome is needed. Something like: shower, pjs, makeup removal, brushing teeth, quick meditation, lights out. As you get used to it, you can add extra steps and even get your family to join you.
  5. Make Sleep a part of Self-Care: I have found that a great way for my clients to work on their sleeping habits, is to make it almost a homework instead of this elusive and ethereal thing. When you make it part of your MANDATORY Self-Care routine, you start feeling pampered and cared for whenever you get to enjoy a good rest.

Finally, particularly us moms, tend to have a love-hate relationship with sleep. On one hand we miss it (let's face it, being tired isn't chic since the 90s) but on the other, there's a lot of guilt around oversleeping or choosing to "sleep too much". You know what? I say: forgettaboutit! Be proud of yourself for asking for support from a loved one so you can sleep in or enjoy a nap. Celebrate your commitment to your greatest love: YOU!

In the end, the best way of being the woman, mom, professional and human you can be is by being rested and ready... So, yallah get some sleep!

What are some of your trick and tips to get more rest and sleep?
